Snow reliability: Les Arcs, Les Trois Vallées and Alpe d'Huez among Europe's best

✍️ SnowFinder editorial team📅 28 October 2026⏱ 5 min

The British tour operator Inghams studied more than 100 ski resorts and regions in the Northern Hemisphere to measure their reliability. Five French ski areas feature in its European top 10 and ten in the top 20. Les Arcs make the podium with 92.2 points. Pontedilegno-Tonale, in Italy, takes first place with 93.1 points.

Key takeaways: Les Arcs are third with 92.2 points, the best French score. · Les Trois Vallées is fourth with 91.1 points and scores 100 out of 100 for snow reliability. · Alpe d'Huez (90.5), Tignes – Val d'Isère (89.4) and Espace San Bernardo (89.2) are also in the top 10. · The study covers the 2017-2018 to 2025-2026 seasons, during peak season, from 5 January to 20 March.

Which French ski areas feature at the top of the ranking?

The top spot goes to Pontedilegno-Tonale, in Lombardy, with 93.1 points. This Italian ski area has 46 runs and peaks at 3,016 metres. Austria's Obertauern is second. Les Arcs complete the podium with 92.2 points, the best score achieved by a French ski area.

Les Trois Vallées, which includes Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Méribel, Courchevel, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, Brides-les-Bains and Orelle, is fourth with 91.1 points. It scores the maximum 100 out of 100 for snow reliability: on every day of peak season studied, the bottom of the runs had at least 30 centimetres of snow.

Alpe d'Huez is fifth with 90.5 points. Its Pic Blanc glacier, at 3,300 metres, often allows skiing into spring. Two other French ski areas enter the top 10: Tignes – Val d'Isère, with 89.4 points, and Espace San Bernardo, with 89.2 points. The latter links La Rosière, on the French side, to La Thuile, on the Italian side.

How was reliability measured?

Inghams used data from seven seasons, from 2017-2018 to 2025-2026, excluding winters disrupted by Covid. Only peak season was retained, from 5 January to 20 March. The final score combines five weighted criteria.

The most important criterion, weighted at 35%, measures the average percentage of lifts and runs in operation during the main season. Snow reliability accounts for 25%: it looks at the proportion of peak-season days with sufficient snow. Consistency accounts for 20%: it measures how stable this operation is from one season to the next.

What to know about Les Arcs, the top French ski area?

Les Arcs are part of Paradiski, one of the largest linked ski areas in the world. The resort is surrounded by alpine meadows and glaciers, and its highest point reaches 3,226 metres. The study presents the resort as a good choice for freestyle enthusiasts and for skiers looking for reliable conditions.
