Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability
A resort on a human scale, Saint-Jean-d'Aulps focuses on the quality of its welcome and its closeness rather than on impressive figures. Its 40 km of runs are perfectly suited to a 3 to 4 day stay, especially for families or skiers who do not need to constantly change their playground. Saint-Jean-d'Aulps's family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, a well-run childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It is one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. The modest altitude of Saint-Jean-d'Aulps, starting at 820 m and rising to 1,800 m, makes it sensitive to climate variations. January and February remain the safest months for optimal snow cover. Outside this window, checking the snow reports before setting off is strongly recommended. At 42€, the day lift pass places Saint-Jean-d'Aulps among the intermediate resorts on budget: neither cheap nor exorbitant. The quality of the ski area and its facilities justifies this price for most skiers. In short, Saint-Jean-d'Aulps is one of those rare resorts that combines a real village, a sincere family atmosphere and runs suited to everyone. It would be hard to have a bad stay here.
🏔️ Les Portes du Soleil
Twelve resorts, two countries, one lift pass: the Portes du Soleil was born in 1964 from a handful of French and Swiss mayors who had the slightly crazy idea of linking their villages across the border. The result is like a giant playground: you start the morning in Avoriaz, have lunch in Switzerland, and head back via Châtel in the evening without ever taking your skis off. The area is more rural than its Savoyard neighbours: many runs through the forest, villages that have kept their church steeples and farms, and the famous Mur suisse at Chavanette for those who like a thrill. Be aware that not everything is linked 100% by ski: a few shuttle buses complete the network.
