Did you know?
Two thirds of the commune's territory is classified as a nature reserve: created in 1979, the Contamines-Montjoie reserve is France's highest nature reserve and the only protected area of this type on the Mont Blanc massif, rising from the village (1,100 m) to the Aiguille de Tré-la-Tête (3,892 m).
At the end of the valley, the baroque sanctuary of Notre-Dame de la Gorge marks the end of the road and the start of the paths. It has been a crossing point between France and Italy since antiquity, and a Roman road can still be seen there, now used by the Tour du Mont-Blanc.

✍️ Our verdict on Les Contamines-Montjoie

Les Contamines-Montjoie offers 120 km of well-marked runs, a medium-sized ski area ideal for spending 4 to 5 days without ever doing exactly the same thing twice. The 32 lifts are generally sufficient to handle the flow in high season. The family reputation of Les Contamines-Montjoie is well earned: dedicated beginner areas, a well-organised childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It is one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. The altitude of Les Contamines-Montjoie (1,164 m at the bottom, 2,480 m at the top) allows it to maintain decent snow cover throughout midwinter. January and February are the most reliable months; in December and March, it is worth checking conditions before finalising a booking. The budget for a stay in Les Contamines-Montjoie is clearly high: €56 for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It is the price of excellence, but you should be aware of it before you go. In short: Les Contamines-Montjoie lives up to its promises. A Northern Alps resort that will suit most profiles without disappointing.

Megève, Saint-Gervais, Combloux, La Giettaz and Les Contamines-Montjoie, joined together at the foot of the roof of Europe. Megève, created in the 1920s by the Baroness de Rothschild, who wanted a French Saint-Moritz, remains the resort of French elegance: a medieval village, horse-drawn carriages, Michelin-starred tables. Skiing here is rather gentle, on long runs through the forest with generous sun exposure. One nuance: of the 445 km announced by the lift pass, only 263 km are actually linked by lifts; Les Contamines and Cordon require a transfer. The panorama of Mont Blanc, however, is constant.
