The Chabrières run, with its 98 % gradient at the top, holds the world speed skiing record: 255.5 km/h, set by Frenchman Simon Billy on 22 March 2023. This makes it, along with the Verbier run in Switzerland, one of the only two runs in the world officially approved for speeds over 200 km/h.
The record stayed in the family: Simon's father, Philippe Billy, had already been world record holder on this same run in 1997, at 243.9 km/h, 26 years before his son.

✍️ Our verdict on Vars

The Vars ski area, with its 185 km of runs, is a great offer for every profile: large enough not to get bored during a week, yet compact enough to find your favourite sectors easily. The 36 lifts make it possible to chain descents without long queues. Technical terrain is king in Vars: with 10 black runs and 38 red runs on the programme, confident skiers will find plenty to challenge them. Off-piste and freeride are practised in often excellent conditions thanks to the altitude and the orientation of the slopes. With a summit at 2,750 m and a village at 1,850 m, snow reliability in Vars is generally dependable from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can create tension early in the season, but the situation recovers quickly with the first significant snowfalls. The budget for a stay in Vars is clearly high: 58€ for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It is the price of excellence, but you should be aware of it before you go. In short, Vars lives up to its promises. A Southern Alps resort that will suit most profiles without disappointing.

Vars and Risoul share 185 km of runs either side of the Col de Valbelle, in a landscape of sparse larch forest typical of the Southern Alps. It is the region's second-largest ski area and one of its highest: 83% of runs lie above 2,000 m, which offsets the southern latitude and ensures good-quality snow. Vars is renowned for its Kilomètre Lancé, a speed course where several world records have been set at over 250 km/h. Risoul, a car-free resort from the 1970s, has a more family-friendly and intimate feel. The sun, meanwhile, is everywhere: over 300 days a year.
