Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability
Human-scale resort, Saint-François-Longchamp focuses on warm welcome and closeness rather than impressive figures. Its 70 km of runs are ideal for a 3–4 day stay, especially with family or for skiers who don't need to constantly change their playground. Saint-François-Longchamp's family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, a well-run childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It is one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. With a summit at 2,650 m and a village at 1,450 m, snow cover at Saint-François-Longchamp is generally reliable from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can create tension early in the season, but the situation recovers quickly after the first serious snowfalls. The day pass at 36€ places Saint-François-Longchamp among the intermediate resorts on budget: neither cheap nor exorbitant. The quality of the ski area and its facilities justifies this price for most skiers. In short: Saint-François-Longchamp keeps its promises. A Northern Alps resort that will suit most profiles without disappointing.
🏔️ Le Grand Domaine
Valmorel and Saint-François-Longchamp join up via the Col de la Madeleine, forming 165 km of runs between Tarentaise and Maurienne. Valmorel is a case apart in the Alps: built in 1976, it deliberately rejected concrete in favour of a fully pedestrian village of timber and lauze stone, with painted façades and a central shopping street — an architectural gamble that has aged rather well. Saint-François-Longchamp, on the Maurienne side, is sunnier and more low-key. The area is particularly well suited to families and intermediate skiers, with a majority of blue runs and excellent value for money.
