Did you know?
Born in 1976 from plans by the architect Michel Bezançon, Valmorel pioneered a new genre: the 'fourth-generation resort', designed as a traditional Savoyard village, with wood, stone, lauze roofs, trompe-l'œil frescoes and the entirely pedestrian rue du Bourg. Its success launched the vogue for neo-regional architecture in the mountains.
The project grew out of the merger of two communes seeking to halt the depopulation of the valley. The resort is today linked to Saint-François-Longchamp, Doucy and Celliers within the Grand Domaine.

✍️ Our verdict on Valmorel

Valmorel offers 95 km of well-marked runs – a mid-sized ski area that's ideal for spending 4 to 5 days without ever doing exactly the same thing twice. The 27 lifts are generally enough to handle the crowds in high season. Valmorel's family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, a well-run childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It's one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for getting children started on skiing. With a summit at 2,550 m and a village at 1,400 m, Valmorel's snow cover is generally reliable from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can create difficulties early in the season, but the situation recovers quickly once the first decent snowfalls arrive. A stay in Valmorel is clearly expensive: 56€ for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It's the price of excellence – but be aware of it before you go. In short: Valmorel is one of those rare resorts that combines a real village, a sincere family atmosphere and runs suited to everyone. It's hard to have a bad stay here.

🏔️ Le Grand Domaine

Valmorel and Saint-François-Longchamp join up via the Col de la Madeleine, forming 165 km of runs between Tarentaise and Maurienne. Valmorel is a case apart in the Alps: built in 1976, it deliberately rejected concrete in favour of a fully pedestrian village of timber and lauze stone, with painted façades and a central shopping street — an architectural gamble that has aged rather well. Saint-François-Longchamp, on the Maurienne side, is sunnier and more low-key. The area is particularly well suited to families and intermediate skiers, with a majority of blue runs and excellent value for money.
