ℹ️ These figures relate to the Espace Lumière (Pra-Loup – Val d'Allos) ski area, shared by several resorts: kilometres of runs, number of runs, lifts and lift pass are common to all. The figures shown here and on neighbouring resort pages therefore refer to the same ski area and the same lift pass, so they are not added together.

It was here, on 13 July 1975, that Bernard Thévenet ended the reign of Eddy Merckx, nicknamed “the Cannibal”, in the Tour de France, dropping him on the final climb to take the yellow jersey. That stage remains one of the most legendary in Tour history.
Created in 1962, the resort forms the Espace Lumière ski area with La Foux d'Allos (180 km of runs).

✍️ Our verdict on Pra-Loup

The Pra-Loup ski area, with its 180 km of runs, offers a great deal for every type of skier: big enough that you won't go round in circles for a week, yet compact enough to find your favourite sectors easily. The 37 lifts let you chain descents without long waits. Pra-Loup's family reputation is well earned: dedicated beginner areas, a well-organised childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It is one of the most reassuring resorts in the Southern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. With a summit at 2,600 m and a village at 1,500 m, Pra-Loup's snow reliability is generally good from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can cause tension early in the season, but the situation recovers quickly once serious snowfalls arrive. The 49€ day lift pass places Pra-Loup among the mid-range resorts on price: neither cheap nor exorbitant. The quality of the ski area and its facilities justifies this price for most skiers. In short, Pra-Loup is a safe bet in French skiing: a large ski area, good snow and prices that still feel justified. A destination that deserves its reputation.

Pra-Loup and Val d'Allos La Foux have been linked since 1972 above the Ubaye valley, forming one of the largest ski areas in the Southern Alps with 180 km of runs. Pra-Loup was founded by Honoré Bonnet, coach of the French Olympic champion team of 1968, who wanted a sunny training ground: the result is a varied ski area, largely wooded with larches, with a comfortable vertical drop. Val d'Allos, on the other side of the Col de l'Encombrette, opens onto the Mercantour National Park. The climate is that of the south: dry, bright, and generous with blue-sky days.
