Did you know?
The village is guarded by the Barrière de l'Esseillon: five monumental forts built in the early 19th century by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia to... protect itself from France. They bear the names of the royal family (Victor-Emmanuel, Marie-Christine, Charles-Félix...) and have never seen fire.
A tasty anecdote: when Savoy became French in 1860, France agreed to destroy the forts. It began with Fort Charles-Félix... then stopped there, and occupied the others militarily for decades.
Nearby stands the Sardières monolith, a 93 m rocky needle rising out of the forest. It was at its foot that the Vanoise National Park was inaugurated on 26 June 1965.

✍️ Our view of Aussois

A resort on a human scale, Aussois focuses on friendly service and proximity rather than impressive figures. Its 55 km of runs are ideal for a 3- to 4-day stay, especially for families or skiers who don't need to constantly change their playground. Aussois's family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, a well-run childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It's one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. With a summit at 2,750 m and a village at 1,500 m, snow reliability at Aussois is generally dependable from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can cause strain early in the season, but the situation recovers quickly once substantial snowfall arrives. The 41€ day lift pass places Aussois among the mid-range resorts on budget: neither cheap nor exorbitant. The quality of the ski area and facilities justifies the price for most skiers. In short: Aussois is one of those rare resorts that combines a genuine village, a sincere family atmosphere and runs suited to everyone. It's hard to have a bad stay here.
