Did you know?
The Col du Mont-Cenis, just above, is one of the oldest passes in the Alps: Charlemagne, pilgrims on the Via Francigena and armies crossed it for centuries. It was Napoleon who, at the start of the 19th century, had the ancient mule track turned into a proper carriage road, the one still used today.
The magnificent turquoise lake on the plateau is artificial: the dam built between 1962 and 1968 drowned the natural lake, the centuries-old hospice and its mountain chalets beneath its waters. The combe, Italian until 1947, only became French again with the Treaty of Paris.

Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability

✍️ Our verdict on Val Cenis

Val Cenis offers 125 km of well-marked runs, a mid-sized ski area that is ideal for spending 4 to 5 days without ever doing exactly the same thing twice. The 29 lifts are generally sufficient to handle the crowds in high season. Val Cenis's family reputation is well earned: dedicated beginner areas, a well-organised childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It is one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. With a summit at 2,800 m and a village at 1,400 m, snow reliability at Val Cenis is generally dependable from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can cause tension early in the season, but the situation recovers quickly once serious snowfalls arrive. At 50€, the day lift pass places Val Cenis among the mid-range resorts on price: neither cheap nor exorbitant. The quality of the ski area and its facilities justifies the cost for most skiers. In short: Val Cenis is one of those rare resorts that combines a real village, a sincere family atmosphere and runs suited to everyone. It's hard to have a bad stay here.
