Did you know?
The village emblem is... a devil. In 1857, a mischievous choirboy at odds with the priest carved a devil carrying off a priest under his arm and left it beneath the priest's window. The little statuette kept travelling back and forth between the two windows, until a passing tourist noticed it and bought it. A business was born: Bessans devils are still carved today.
The Bessans plateau, at 1,750 m, is one of France's great temples of Nordic skiing: over 120 km of marked runs and a biathlon stadium where the national teams train.

✍️ Our verdict on Bessans

Bessans is a low-key resort on a modest scale — 3 km of runs for an intimate skiing experience, far from the bustle of the big resorts. This is where you come for calm, authenticity and no queues at the lifts. Bessans' family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It is one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. Bessans' modest altitude — starting at 1,740 m, summit at 1,900 m — makes it sensitive to climate variations. January and February remain the safest months for optimal snow cover. Outside that window, checking the snow reports before setting off is strongly recommended. With a day lift pass at just 18€, Bessans is one of the most affordable destinations in France. For families on a tight budget, or skiers who want to make the most of their days without breaking the bank, it is a sincere and often overlooked choice. In short: Bessans does not rival the giants of skiing, and does not pretend to. It is an honest, often underrated destination that deserves to be (re)discovered.
