Did you know?
The Petit Train d'Artouste, now a tourist attraction, was first built in the 1920s to carry 2,000 workers and materials for the construction of the Lac d'Artouste dam, one of the largest dams in the Pyrenees, commissioned in 1929. It only became a tourist attraction in 1932.
Culminating at nearly 2,000 m, it is the second-highest train in France, behind the Mont Blanc tramway.

✍️ Our verdict on Artouste

Artouste is a small, low-key resort: 17 km of runs for an intimate skiing experience, far from the bustle of the big resorts. This is where you come for calm, authenticity and no queues at the lifts. Artouste's family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It's one of the most reassuring resorts in the Pyrenees for getting started with children. Its altitude (1,800 m at the base, 2,100 m at the top) helps it keep decent snow cover through midwinter. January and February are the most reliable; in December and March, it's worth checking conditions before finalising a booking. With a day lift pass at just 20€, Artouste is one of the most affordable destinations in France. For families on a budget, or skiers who want to fit in plenty of days without breaking the bank, it's a sincere and often overlooked choice. In short: Artouste doesn't rival the giants of skiing, and doesn't pretend to. It's an honest destination, often underrated, that deserves to be (re)discovered.
