Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability
Valmalenco is a modest, low-key resort — 21 km of runs for an intimate skiing experience, far from the bustle of the big resorts. This is where people come for calm, authenticity and no queues at the lifts. Technical terrain reigns at Valmalenco: with 24 black runs and 57 red runs on the programme, confident skiers will find plenty to challenge them. Off-piste and freeride are practised here in often excellent conditions, thanks to the altitude and the orientation of the slopes. Valmalenco's altitude (1,527 m at the base, 2,353 m at the top) allows it to maintain reasonable snow cover through the depths of winter. January and February are the most reliable months; in December and March, it is worth checking conditions before finalising a booking. The budget for a stay at Valmalenco is clearly high: €58 for the day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It is the price of excellence — but you should be aware of it before you go. In short: Valmalenco does not compete with the giants of skiing, and does not pretend to. It is an honest destination, often underrated, that deserves to be (re)discovered.
