Did you know?
It is the French capital of ephemeral sculpture: every January since the 1980s, artists from around the world compete in international ice sculpture and then snow sculpture competitions, a tradition imported from Quebec. In summer, it's the turn of straw and hay sculpture competitions...
The village is the base camp for the legendary Galibier pass (2,642 m), one of the giants of the Tour de France, reached after crossing the Télégraphe pass.

✍️ Our verdict on Valloire

Valloire offers 90 km of well-marked runs, a medium-sized ski area that's ideal for spending 4 to 5 days without ever doing exactly the same thing twice. The 17 lifts are generally sufficient to handle the crowds in high season. Valloire's family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, a well-organised childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It's one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. With a summit at 2,600 m and a village at 1,430 m, snow reliability in Valloire is generally dependable from January to late March. A few exceptionally mild winters can cause strain early in the season, but the situation recovers quickly with the first serious snowfalls. A Valloire stay is clearly on the expensive side: a 55€ day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the priciest in the Alps. It's the price of excellence, but be aware of it before you go. In short: Valloire is one of those rare resorts that combines a genuine village, a sincere family atmosphere and runs suited to everyone. It's hard to have a bad stay here.

🏔️ Galibier-Thabor

Valloire and Valmeinier, two villages in the Maurienne valley nestled below the Galibier pass, have shared 160 km of runs spread across five slopes since 2007. Valloire has kept its character as a street village, with its 17th-century baroque church and its authentic atmosphere; Valmeinier, the newer of the two, spreads between an old village at 1,500 m and a resort at 1,800 m. The ski area climbs to 2,750 m, and 70% of its runs lie above 2,000 m, which ensures solid snow cover from December to April. It is also a playground for cyclists in summer, with the Galibier and the Télégraphe within handlebar reach.
