Saas-Grund is a little-known resort on a modest scale — 26 km of runs for an intimate skiing experience, far from the bustle of the big resorts. This is where you come for calm, authenticity and lift queues that simply don't exist. Saas-Grund has kept the identity of an authentic mountain village, far from the concrete resorts of the 1970s. Here, people come for the fresh air, the unspoilt landscapes and a friendly atmosphere that stands in contrast to the industrialisation of skiing in some of the big ski areas. As far as snow goes, Saas-Grund is in a strong position with its summit at 3,200 m — even in capricious winters, the upper runs hold up well into April. The village at 1,559 m is also well placed to offer comfortable conditions from mid-December onwards. The budget for a stay in Saas-Grund is clearly high: 66€ for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It is the price of excellence — but you should be aware of it before you go. In short: Saas-Grund does not compete with the giants of skiing, and doesn't pretend to. It is an honest destination, often underestimated, that deserves to be (re)discovered.
