Our take on Rothwald

Rothwald is a low-key resort on a modest scale — 25 km of runs for an intimate skiing experience, far from the bustle of the big resorts. This is where people come for calm, authenticity and no queues at the lifts. Rothwald's family reputation is well earned: dedicated beginner areas, well-groomed green runs and a good-natured atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It's one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for learning to ski with children. Rothwald's altitude (1,750 m at the base, 2,270 m at the top) allows it to maintain decent snow cover through the depths of winter. January and February are the most reliable; in December and March, it's worth checking conditions before finalising a booking. The 46€ day lift pass places Rothwald among the mid-priced resorts — neither cheap nor exorbitant. The quality of the ski area and its facilities justifies this price for most skiers. In short: Rothwald doesn't rival the giants of skiing, and doesn't pretend to. It's an honest destination, often underrated, that deserves to be (re)discovered.
