Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability
Arolla is a small, low-key resort with 27 km of runs, offering an intimate skiing experience far from the bustle of the big resorts. It's the place to come for calm, authenticity and no queues at the lifts. Arolla's family reputation is well earned: dedicated beginner areas, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It's one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. With a summit at 2,877 m and a village at 1,984 m, snow reliability at Arolla is generally good from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can cause difficulties early in the season, but conditions usually recover quickly once the first heavy snowfalls arrive. Budgeting for a stay in Arolla is clearly on the high side: 53€ for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It's the price of excellence, but you should be aware of it before you go. In short, Arolla doesn't rival the giants of skiing and doesn't pretend to. It's an honest, often underrated destination that deserves to be (re)discovered.
