Chamonix vs Megève: which resort to choose?
📊 The figures head to head
Chamonix
Megève
👤 Which resort for which profile?
La Vallée Blanche, the Grands Montets, the Brévent: a legendary playground for committed skiing. Megève is fun but without the same big thrill.
Preserved village architecture, palace hotels (Les Fermes de Marie, Le Chalet du Mont d'Arbois), Michelin-starred dining. Old-fashioned chic without ostentation.
A more accessible ski area, plenty of beginner areas, a relaxed atmosphere. Chamonix is tougher for young children.
Several Michelin-starred restaurants (Flocons de Sel, La Table de l'Alpaga) and a strong culinary tradition. Chamonix also has good restaurants but fewer stars.
The world capital of mountaineering, with a colourful, international atmosphere and unique energy. This is real high mountain.
1h from Geneva by car, with a TGV connection via Saint-Gervais. Megève is also accessible but requires a little more driving from the airport.
💡 Our verdict
Chamonix is made for skiers who want to live high mountain life and committed skiing. Megève is made for those looking for a chic, gastronomic and restful stay. Both are excellent destinations, but they attract different crowds — choose according to your holiday mood.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Do Chamonix and Megève share a common lift pass?
Chamonix's Mont-Blanc Unlimited pass covers its entire ski area (Brévent-Flégère, Grands Montets, Aiguille du Midi, Les Houches) plus a few bonuses such as Courmayeur. Megève is part of the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski area (Megève, Saint-Gervais, Combloux, La Giettaz): it is a separate lift pass.
Which resort suits beginners?
Megève, without hesitation. The Mont d'Arbois and Rochebrune area offers plenty of blue and green runs that are ideal for beginners. Chamonix has beginner areas at Brévent or Planards, but the valley's overall spirit leans more towards committed skiing.
Can you do the Vallée Blanche as a family?
No. The Vallée Blanche is a 20 km glacier descent through high mountain terrain, requiring a guide and a minimum level of skiing experience. It is Chamonix's signature experience but reserved for experienced skiers.
Is Megève really expensive?
At the very top end (palace hotels, starred restaurants), yes — Megève is in the exclusive club of France's most expensive resorts. But you will also find affordable rental accommodation, and lift passes are cheaper than in Val d'Isère or Courchevel.
