Avoriaz vs Morzine: which resort to choose?
📊 The figures head to head
Avoriaz
Morzine
👤 Which resort for which profile?
Resort 100% pedestrian — no cars, ski-in/ski-out accommodation, horse-drawn sleighs. Total safety and simplified logistics.
Central position in the Portes du Soleil (650 km), reliable snow at 1,800 m, direct access to legendary runs (Hauts-Forts, Chavanette).
The Stash and Lil'Stash are world-renowned landmarks. Several freestyle zones in the heart of the ski area.
Real village life all year round: restaurants, cinema, sports hall, walks around the lac de Montriond. Avoriaz is stark and 100% focused on skiing.
Hotels and rentals 20-30% cheaper than in Avoriaz for an identical ski area (the Portes du Soleil lift pass is shared).
1h from the airport, quick access. From there, Avoriaz requires you to go up to the resort by gondola or by a road closed to ordinary traffic.
💡 Our verdict
Avoriaz is designed for skiers: pedestrian-only, high altitude, ski-in ski-out, world-class snowpark. Morzine is designed for holidays: real village life, accessible, versatile. Good news: the ski area is the same (650 km of the Portes du Soleil), so you lose nothing by choosing either.
❓ Frequently asked questions
Do Morzine and Avoriaz share the same ski area?
Yes. Both give access to the 650 km of the Portes du Soleil, the Franco-Swiss ski area linking 12 resorts including Châtel, Les Gets, Champéry and Champoussin. From Morzine, the Pléney gondola or the Avoriaz one takes you into the heart of the ski area in a few minutes.
Is Avoriaz really 100% pedestrian?
Yes, completely. Cars stay in the car park at the entrance to the resort, and you get around on foot, by sledge, by horse-drawn sleigh or by shuttle bus. It's a major advantage for families with young children.
Which resort should I choose if I'm not skiing every day?
Morzine, without hesitation. The village is lively all year round, with plenty of restaurants, walks around the lac de Montriond, a cinema, and a sports hall with an ice rink and swimming pool. Avoriaz is less enjoyable for non-skiers.
Is Avoriaz suitable for beginners?
Yes, very much so. There is a large beginners' area in the heart of the resort, and green and blue runs that are perfectly suited to learners. The ESF and international ski schools are well regarded. Morzine also does a very good job for beginners with the Pléney.
