A first ski holiday starts with preparation before you leave: choosing a suitable lesson, hiring well-fitted equipment, buying the right lift pass and knowing how to read the piste map. Here are practical pointers, drawn from resort and ski school websites, to approach the coming season calmly and make the most of your first runs.
Key points: At Le Lioran, the ski area is due to open from Saturday 19 December to Sunday 21 March 2027. · At Le Lioran, the beginner day pass costs 23.50 €; at Les Angles, the beginner lift pass is 29 € per day. · At the ESF in Aussois, the Ourson discovery course welcomes children from age 5, and the Flocon from age 8 for complete beginners. · Green runs are for beginners; blue runs are a little steeper.
Which lesson should you book as a beginner?
For children, ski schools organise learning by levels. At the ESF in Aussois, for example, the Ourson discovery courses welcome children aged at least 5, whether they are discovering sliding or have already been through the Piou-Piou club. The Flocon discovery course is reserved for children aged at least 8 who are complete beginners.
On the practical side, the same school offers a package combining lessons and lift pass when you book online, which saves you managing two separate purchases. Also think about a helmet: at Chamrousse, wearing one is presented as strongly recommended for skiing safely, and even compulsory during lessons.
Hire or buy your equipment?
Equipment weighs heavily on the budget. According to the Chamrousse resort, buying equipment is the third biggest expense of a ski holiday, behind accommodation and lift passes. For a beginner, the resort therefore recommends hiring, which lets you discover skiing without a major investment.
For alpine skiing, basic equipment includes skis, boots, poles and a helmet, with a back protector if you plan to ski on moguls. When hiring, take the time to try things on and choose your equipment carefully, and don't neglect breakage and theft insurance.
How does a beginner lift pass work?
Many resorts offer a reduced pass limited to the learning areas. At Le Lioran, whose ski area is due to open from Saturday 19 December to Sunday 21 March 2027, the beginner pass gives access to 2 drag lifts and a chairlift. The beginner day ticket there costs 23.50 € and the 4-hour consecutive formula 17.00 €.
At Les Angles, the beginner pass offers unlimited access to 2 drag lifts, the Bas de Station one and the Pla Del Mir one, at a single rate of 29 € per day. It can only be bought at the ticket office, and the purchase can be converted into a day lift pass but is non-refundable.
How do you read the piste map?
To indicate the difficulty of alpine runs, resorts use a common code of four colours. Areas for beginners and less confident skiers are green and present no major difficulties. Blue runs remain very easy, but they are a little steeper and sometimes have pronounced changes in terrain.
On the mountain, each run's colour appears on the direction signs and on the round markers. These markers, placed at regular intervals, also show the name of the run and a number that decreases as you descend, which is handy for orienting yourself and knowing where you are.
Which mistakes should you avoid on a first holiday?
First mistake: thinking you're ready for a blue run too quickly. When the snow is icy, a blue that looks easy can become very tiring for a skier still uncomfortable with edging. Another pitfall off the pistes: running shoes should be avoided; waterproof snow boots with grip-patterned soles are more suitable.
On the budget side, check the sales conditions of the beginner lift pass: at Les Angles, it can only be bought at the ticket office and is non-refundable. For hired equipment, breakage and theft insurance is one of the points that the Chamrousse resort recommends not neglecting.
Our tips
- For a first holiday, prefer hiring and take the time to try on your boots and skis in the shop.
- Remember to take out breakage and theft insurance when you hire your equipment.
- Stick to green runs until you feel comfortable, especially if the snow is hard.
- Before you leave, check on the resort's official website where and how the beginner lift pass is sold.
