Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability
Zugspitze is a low-key resort on a modest scale – 17 km of runs for an intimate skiing experience, far from the bustle of the big resorts. This is where you come for calm, authenticity and no queues at the lifts. Zugspitze's family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It's one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. With a summit at 2,650 m and a village at 2,000 m, snow reliability at Zugspitze is generally dependable from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can cause strain early in the season, but things recover quickly once the first serious snowfalls arrive. A stay at Zugspitze is clearly expensive: €69 for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It's the price of excellence – but be aware of it before you go. In short, Zugspitze doesn't rival the giants of skiing and doesn't pretend to. It's an honest, often underrated destination that deserves to be (re)discovered.
