Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability
Sillian is a low-key resort on a modest scale: 22 km of runs for an intimate skiing experience, far from the bustle of the big resorts. It's here that people come for calm, authenticity and no queues at the lifts to speak of. Sillian's family reputation is well deserved: dedicated beginner areas, well-groomed green runs and a laid-back atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It is one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for laying the foundations of skiing with children. Sillian's altitude (1,100 m at the base, 2,407 m at the top) allows it to maintain decent snow cover in the depths of winter. January and February are the most reliable months; in December and March, it's worth checking conditions before finalising a booking. A stay in Sillian is clearly expensive: €74 for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It's the price of excellence, but you should be aware of it before you go. In short: Sillian doesn't rival the giants of skiing, and doesn't pretend to. It's an honest destination, often underrated, that deserves to be (re)discovered.
