Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability
Mallnitz – Ankogel is a modest, low-key resort, with 12.8 km of runs offering an intimate skiing experience far from the bustle of the big resorts. People come here for the calm, the authenticity and the lift queues that barely exist. Mallnitz – Ankogel's reputation as a family resort is well earned: dedicated beginner areas, well-groomed green runs and a friendly, easygoing atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It is one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for getting children started on skiing. With a summit at 2,636 m and a village at 1,266 m, snow reliability at Mallnitz – Ankogel is generally dependable from January to the end of March. A few exceptionally mild winters can cause tension early in the season, but conditions recover quickly once the first decent snowfalls arrive. A stay in Mallnitz – Ankogel is clearly on the expensive side: 54€ for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and high-altitude restaurants that are among the priciest in the Alps. It's the price of excellence, but it's worth being aware of it before you go. In short, Mallnitz – Ankogel doesn't compete with the giants of skiing and doesn't pretend to. It's an honest, often underrated destination that deserves to be (re)discovered.
