About Alpe du Grand Serre

The Alpe du Grand Serre is a small, family-run resort at 1,370 m in the Trièves, south of Grenoble. Its 55 km ski area offers relaxed skiing in a preserved natural setting, with views of the Vercors and the Écrins. ⚠️ In October 2024, local councillors voted to end operations, deeming them loss-making; a strong local campaign secured a one-year reprieve. The resort remains open for winter 2025/2026, which the local press describes as potentially its last. Check before booking.

Did you know?
It's one of the oldest resorts in the Dauphiné: the first drag lift, the Petit Mollard one, was built as early as 1937, alongside a 60-room hotel. People were already skiing these slopes long before that, since the late 19th century.
The resort sits in the commune with the unpromising name of La Morte, a name that comes from geology: the valley is a 'dead valley', abandoned by its waters after the glaciers melted.
Here there is no large urban complex: the resort is scattered across hamlets (la Blache, le Couvent, le Désert...), between which the farms take back the land in summer.

✍️ Our verdict on Alpe du Grand Serre

A resort on a human scale, Alpe du Grand Serre puts its trust in the quality of its welcome and its closeness rather than in impressive figures. Its 55 km of runs are a perfect fit for a 3 to 4 day stay, especially for families or skiers who don't need to keep changing their playground. The family reputation of Alpe du Grand Serre is well earned: dedicated beginner areas, a well-organised childcare service, well-groomed green runs and a friendly atmosphere at the foot of the lifts. It's one of the most reassuring resorts in the Northern Alps for getting children started on skiing. The altitude of Alpe du Grand Serre (1,400 m at the base, 2,197 m at the top) allows it to maintain decent snow cover through midwinter. January and February are the most reliable; in December and March, it's worth checking conditions before finalising a booking. The 28€ day lift pass remains reasonable for the quality of the ski area on offer. Counting accommodation, skiing and meals, Alpe du Grand Serre suits those who want a good week without the final bill knocking them off their chairs. In short: Alpe du Grand Serre keeps its promises. A Northern Alps resort that will suit most profiles without disappointing.
