Courchevel vs Méribel: which resort to choose?

Full comparison: ski area, snow reliability, atmosphere, budget. Our verdict to help you decide.
The two sisters of Les 3 Vallées, a few kilometres apart and linked by ski, embody two different visions of luxury. Courchevel 1850, the ultra-chic showcase. Méribel, its warmer version.

👤 Which resort for which profile?

💎 Ultimate luxury / jet-set
Courchevel

Courchevel 1850 has the highest concentration of palace hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants in the Alps. Architecture, boutiques, restaurants: top-of-the-range throughout.

🏡 Well-off family looking for an authentic chalet
Méribel

Strict architectural charter requiring wood, upscale chalets in a warmer, more natural setting. More affordable than Courchevel 1850 without compromising on quality.

🎿 Central position in the 3 Vallées
Méribel

Méribel is literally at the heart of the 3 Vallées: you can reach everywhere in a few gondola rides (Val Thorens, Courchevel, La Tania). Ideal for exploring the large ski area.

🍷 Michelin-starred dining
Courchevel

Several starred restaurants (Le 1947 by Yannick Alléno, Le Chabichou, Le Sarkara). Méribel has some good restaurants but fewer Michelin stars.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families with children
Méribel

Méribel-Mottaret and Méribel Centre offer gentle nursery slopes, active ESF ski schools and a progressive ski area. Courchevel 1650 or 1550 are also very good for families, but 1850 is less of an obvious choice.

💼 More budget-friendly resorts
Méribel

Méribel remains upmarket, but its 4* accommodation and rentals are 20-40% cheaper than in Courchevel 1850.

💡 Our verdict

Courchevel is made for those who want unapologetic luxury, starred dining and status. Méribel is made for those who want an upmarket stay in a warmer, more natural setting, ideally placed in the 3 Vallées. Good news: the two share the same 600 km ski area, so you lose nothing by choosing either one.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Do Courchevel and Méribel share the same ski area?

Yes, both sit at the heart of the 3 Vallées (600 km, 170 lifts). With a 3 Vallées lift pass, you can access the whole ski area, including Val Thorens, Les Menuires, La Tania and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville.

Is Courchevel really only for the wealthy?

Courchevel has 4 altitude levels (1300, 1550, 1650, 1850), and 1850 is indeed very upmarket. But Courchevel 1550 (Le Praz) or 1300 (Saint-Bon) are much more affordable, with rentals at reasonable prices.

What is the best central base for exploring the 3 Vallées?

Méribel, without a doubt. Its location makes it easy to head out to Val Thorens (30 min on skis) or Courchevel (15 min), which makes it the ideal base for skiing the whole ski area.

Is Méribel suitable for families?

Very suitable. Méribel-Mottaret and Méribel Centre have gentle nursery slopes, active ESF ski schools and childcare. The resort has a genuine family culture, particularly in Méribel-Village or Les Allues.
