Based on the resort's altitude and historical snow reliability
A resort on a human scale, Airolo focuses on the quality of its welcome and its closeness rather than on impressive figures. Its 30 km of runs are ideal for a stay of 3 to 4 days, especially for families or skiers who don't need to constantly change their playground. Technical terrain reigns in Airolo: with 47 black and 50 red runs on the programme, confirmed skiers will find plenty to challenge them seriously. Off-piste and freeride are practised here in often excellent conditions thanks to the altitude and the aspect of the slopes. Airolo's altitude (1,175 m at the base, 2,250 m at the top) allows it to maintain reasonable snow cover in the depths of winter. January and February are the most reliable months; in December and March, it is best to check conditions before finalising a booking. The budget for a stay in Airolo is clearly high: 62€ for a day lift pass, plus accommodation and mountain restaurants that are among the most expensive in the Alps. It is the price of excellence, but you should be aware of it before you set off. In short: Airolo doesn't compete with the giants of skiing, and doesn't claim to. It is an honest destination, often underrated, that deserves to be (re)discovered.
