Saint-François-Longchamp doesn't have the reputation of its neighbours in the Tarentaise, and that is precisely what makes it one of the best deals in the Alpine massif. For the price of an average resort, you gain access here to a 165 km ski area — the fifth largest in Savoie — thanks to a little-known link: the one that connects it, ski in and ski out, to Valmorel.
A very real link, and no small one
Unlike some inter-resort links that exist mostly on paper, this one works in practice, on skis, on blue runs from start to finish. The Frêne detachable chairlift, on the Saint-François side, takes you up to the Col de la Madeleine — one of the most legendary passes of the Tour de France in summer, crossed here gently on snow in winter. On the other side of the col lies the Valmorel ski area. Together, the two resorts form what locals call “Le Grand Domaine”: 165 km of runs, 103 runs in total and 49 lifts, making it the fifth largest ski area in Savoie.
This link is not a recent innovation either: it has existed since the mid-1980s, which makes it one of the first ski links between the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys.
Value for money, precisely
This is Saint-François-Longchamp's central argument: the Grand Domaine lift pass (full access to Valmorel included) hovers around €57–60 for an adult day ticket. By comparison, the big neighbouring resorts of the Tarentaise — Val d'Isère, Tignes, Courchevel — go well beyond €70 for a day lift pass, not counting accommodation that is generally much more expensive. For an equally large ski area (165 km, fifth in Savoie), the budget gap is far from trivial over a week's holiday.

A cirque-shaped resort, designed for families
Founded in the mid-1950s around a first drag lift, the resort took its current name in 1969. Today it spreads across three hamlets arranged around a single natural amphitheatre, facing due south towards the Lauzière massif — which guarantees generous sunshine across the whole ski area. Awarded the Flocon Vert label since 2022 and Famille Plus, it prides itself on a friendly, reassuring atmosphere: the heart of the resort remains visible from almost everywhere, a real plus for keeping an eye on the children between runs.
Practical information
Saint-François-Longchamp illustrates a fairly simple rule in the mountains: the best deal is not always the resort you already know. With the Grand Domaine and its link to Valmorel via the Col de la Madeleine, this little corner of Maurienne offers a genuinely large ski area, for a budget that remains resolutely modest.
