Between the lift pass, accommodation and travel, a ski holiday can easily double in price depending on when you book and the period you choose. The good news: most of the extra costs can be avoided if you plan at the right time. Here is the calendar to follow.
📅 Book early
🗓 Avoid February
🌤 Consider spring
The ideal calendar
Summer / early autumn
The best time to book everything. Lift passes on pre-sale, accommodation at its lowest prices, the cheapest train tickets. The resorts' "Prem's" or early-bird offers often appear from this period onwards.
December
Still affordable, outside the Christmas holidays. Ideal for an extended weekend without peak-season prices.
Christmas holidays
First price peak of the season, for both lift passes and accommodation.
January (outside holidays)
The best value of the winter. Less busy resorts, the lowest prices of the season, generally excellent snow cover.
February holidays
The absolute peak. All French school holiday zones overlap over this period: it's the most expensive and busiest time of the year, best avoided if your budget is tight.
March / April
The little-known bargain. Prices drop, days are longer and warmer, and snow remains excellent at altitude (see our article on spring skiing).
💡
Did you know? Some resorts offer flexible 'last-minute' lift passes that are cheaper than the public on-site rate, in addition to early-booking offers. The two ends of the calendar are often the most advantageous, unlike a booking made in between.
Banking on altitude to ski late without breaking the bank
Resorts topping 3,000 m, such as Val Thorens, Tignes and Les 2 Alpes, allow good skiing conditions until April, and even May on the glaciers. The result: you enjoy markedly gentler prices in low season while keeping quality snow. This is not the case for mid-mountain resorts, where snow cover becomes more uncertain from March onwards.
📍 La Clusaz, a concrete example: its advance-sale lift passes start under €30, versus more than €55 at the public on-site rate
Don't forget transport in the budget
As with lift passes, train tickets are often booked several months ahead for the best prices, as fares rise when seats fill up. If you're thinking of getting to your resort by train, book your tickets at the same time as your accommodation rather than at the last minute.
Key takeaways
The worst time February holidays, booked at the last minute
The best time summer/autumn to book, January outside the holidays or March–April to travel
Altitude tip choose a high resort for late-season skiing at gentle prices
Don't forget to book transport early too, not just the lift pass and accommodation
The secret isn't finding THE cheapest resort, but choosing the right moment to book it. The same stay can cost half as much with a few weeks' difference, and it's right now, in the middle of summer, that you should start planning for next winter.
